TRAVELLING TO COSTA RICA

There are many airlines that fly into San Jose (SJO) and Liberia (LIR).  Some fly year round but only on certain days during the Low Season.  Most fly multiple times daily from December to the end of April during the High Season.

Once you arrive, travel choices are Local Airline, Rental Car or Bus/Ferry.

Preferred Methods of Internal Travel:

AIR TRAVEL

The number one preferred travel method is by air from either San Jose or Liberia to Tambor.  If preferred, rental cars are available after you arrive at the Villa.  Sansa Airlines has convenient daily flights that allow for care free travel to Tambor.

During the high season months of December-April, Costa Rica’s regional airlines offer daily trips to Tambor from several major tourist destinations including San Jose, Arenal, Drake Bay, Manuel Antonio, and Tamarindo. Schedules are pared down during the green season, but there are still regular flights to/from Tambor.  The flight is about 25 minutes.  Be sure to check the Sansa web site for luggage weight limits as they could be less than the major airline.

When you land at Tambor there is a $2.25US landing tax for each passenger.  It is also paid when you leave.  At the airstrip, taxis will be waiting or we can pre-arrange someone to pick you up.  The Villa is 5 minutes from the airstrip.

RENTAL CAR

The number two preferred travel method is rental car from San Jose.  There are many car rental agencies that you can arrange from home on the internet.  Be advised that Costa Rican law requires rental contracts to include full accident coverage.  Considering the state of some roads, this is a very good idea and takes away any worry of damage due to road conditions.

From San Jose, take the new Caldera Highway west to Puntarenas. Catch the ferry to Paquera, then follow signs leading southwest to Playa Tambor. The trip will take about one hour from Paquera to Tambor.

The second choice for driving is from Liberia.  From Liberia Airport, take Highway 21 south to Tambor, about 4 hours.  The last 30km is dirt road that will take at least one hour.  Liberia is not our preferred route due to the travel distance.

BUS + FERRY

From San Jose to Cobano (stops in Tambor): $12 (includes ferry fee); 6:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m.; 6 hours. Departs from the Coca Cola Bus station at Calle 12 and Avenida 5. 2642-0219.
